Get ready for your adventure! One chaperone for every 5 students (not including teachers) is recommended. Everyone should bring a sack lunch that can be completely thrown away or recycled. Teachers should bring trash bags for their classes and a box, cooler or bag to keep class lunches in. Please make name tags for all of your students. We find that duct tape and Sharpie do the best job and won’t fall off! Read below to check out our dress code.

Third Grade

Our third grade trips start at 10:00 a.m. and run until 12:30 p.m. Most third grade trips are scheduled on Wednesdays. The cost for students is $5.00 and chaperones and teachers are free! Students will take part in a plant and animal identification scavenger hunt through our habitats, as well as an animal classification lesson in our museum, exploration stations and a picnic lunch! Standards covered in this trip are SC.3.L.15.1, SC.3.L.15.2, and  SC.3.L.17.2.

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders come on a two day field trip. Buses should arrive at 10:00 a.m. and pick up at 1:30 p.m. The cost is $5.00 per student per day and chaperones and teachers are free. On dry day, students will take part in three environmental science lessons. They'll learn about animal adaptations, get up close and personal with live animals, and spend some time exploring the surrounding habitats! On wet day, classes embark on a journey through the woods and wetland that surround the Center. They'll search for and indentify invertebrates through a net fishing activity and will experience a wetland by walking through one on the famous Mud Walk!  Standards covered in this trip are SC.5.L.15.1, SC.5.L.17.1, SC.5.E.7.5, SC.5.L.14.2, depending on which dry day lesson you choose.

What to Wear

Explorers (students, teachers and chaperones) should wear light-weight, comfortable clothing. Sneakers with tall socks are a must as we will be walking though heavily wooded trails.  DRY DAY and 3rd grade students may wear shorts, but bug spray is highly recommended! If students need sunscreen or bug spray, it must be applied at home and not at the Center. Short or long sleeved shirts (no tank tops) should be worn depending on the weather.

For wet day, we recommend old clothing and shoes, girls' hair in a pony tail, and nylon material pants (jeans are OK too). No capris, shorts, or holes in pants. Parents and teachers WILL GET WET! We'll need your help getting the kids through the mud. :)
